Last Wednesday, April 2nd, AppDynamics announced their Spring 2014 release including (amongst lots of other fantastic enhancements) the launch of mobile application performance monitoring for iOS and Android.

We're excited about this at Ranger4 since mobile is the fastest growing consumer technology in history and is undeniably a strategic part of any organisation's software development strategy. Building and managing applications to satisfy and delight newly mobile customers presents new challenges as a result of the increased complexity in developing for multiple mobile platforms - and the proliferation and pace of change with the devices.
Did you know that (data provided by IBM)?

  • 91% of mobile users keep their device within arm's reach 100% of the time

  • 75% of mobile shoppers take action after receiving a location based message.

  • There was a 96% year to year increase in mobile cyber Monday sales between 2012 and 2011

  • 90% of users use multiple screens as channels creating integrated experiences

  • Global machine-to-machine connections will increase from 2 billion un 2011 to 18 billion at the end of 2022

AppDynamics for Mobile makes it possible for you to see:

  • Your mobile app performance

  • Http, and network error information

  • The performance of any API call from your mobile app to your server side

  • Analytics on device, carriers, OS, app versions, crashes and exceptions

AppDynamics is unique in that it provides the ability to trace transactions from a mobile device and correlate that with the transactions that are processing on the server side technology. A mobile application team can have end-to-end visibility of their applications and then troubleshoot issues at high speed and pinpoint and trace problems to their source - whether it’s the application code, device, network or server.

Why focus on mobile applications?

As AppDynamics say:

“Mobile applications now account for 15 percent of all Internet traffic, with 1.5 billion users worldwide.”

This ever increasing number makes it hard to ignore mobile applications and makes it essential to  get it right. Even a simple mobile application can reach tens of millions of users in less than a week. Apps that perform well are rewarded with high ratings and strong sales in the app store but poor performance adversely impacts apps' ratings and delayed responses and app failures can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

So it's really important to know quickly exactly where and why an application is failing - AppDynamics Mobile APM provides real-time insights into your mobile application performance around the world. You can instantly retrieve data by platform, device type, and even performance by region - when changes occur, you'll know about it straight away - your marketing team will be seriously impressed.
