Welcome to the Ranger4 #DevOpsFriday5 series - today we will hear from Sarah Baker. Take it away Sarah!
1) What’s your preferred definition of DevOps?
Tough question. I'd say it's more of my working definition.
Leveraging cultural change management to implement continuous improvement on the organization's software value chain, most often starting with the traditional organization structure boundary between Dev and Ops and working outward.
2) When people ‘do’ DevOps, what’s the most common mistake you see them make?
Creating new silos that replace old ones instead of lowering the barriers.
3) How do you recommend an organisation new to DevOps start?
Assuming you know what DevOps is, if not that's the first order of business.
Observe your org. Identify your value chains and your stakeholders internal and external.
Identify bottlenecks in your value chains.
Focus on and remove impediments.
Rinse, repeat. (ie "the first way")
4) What’s your prediction for what DevOps will look like in 2020?
DevOps matures will fold in to the larger "manufacturing process management" family and adopt an even larger set of management tools. These tools will be part of standard toolset of software product managers, developers and operators.
Tools and Platforms for DevOps will provide more full system orchestration and self-healing capabilities.
High levels of visibility tools needed for feeding feedback loops will continue to develop, eventually leading to integration of expert and self-healing systems capabilities into infrastructure code.
Improved levels of simulation and test tools for developers so their work environment is like working in production, and automated tools to give them fast feedback
5) Where do you like to go to get a DevOps hit?
LinkedIn DevOps Groups such as DevOps
