When we talk about DevOps, we talk about visualising desired future states and what DevOps utopia looks like - how a culture feels where mastery, autonomy and purpose are the norm, where blame has no place, failure is smart and work is joyful and rewarding. We work towards creating these environments and building the processes and toolchains to enable continuous delivery so that innovation can be delivered to the market immediately, at any time. Sure, there are examples of killer companies that are already DevOps Happy - but most of them were born that way. The Googles, Amazons, Facebooks, eBays and Etsys of the world were lucky to start their businesses at a time when they could build the technology in from day one. Other enterprises though have business models that didn’t start out being internet companies, even though they may be increasingly evolving that way.

A survey from the Vanson Bourne market research agency (with CA) late in 2013 indicated that 39% of those surveyed had adopted some form of DevOps and 27% were planning to do so in the near future. Despite this being such a hot topic in the IT sector, and with a high level of take up, the question we are still most commonly asked is: “Where do we start?”

We ran a DevOps Readiness Survey towards the end of 2013, taking a snapshot of the industry's current maturity to allow us to understand more about areas of improvement to give us a baseline to compare against in the future. We used our DevOps Maturity Index (DMI) formula to allow us to score the respondents against a number of organisational, cultural, process and technology attributes and indicators.
